UVM Career Center Peer Leader

The UVM Career Center connects students & alums to people, opportunities and resources to help them find and pursue experiences, develop skills, explore interests, and expand their networks. As a Peer Leader, you will be trained to support all these efforts. You will staff drop-in hours to address common career questions and refer students to our wide array of resources; you will offer guidance to your peers on their resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles (both in-person and virtually); you will support career-related events (large and small); and you will play a KEY role in expanding our reach and connection to our Career Interest Groups.

Skills You Will Apply & Develop:

  • Build capacity as a coach, mentor, and leader by supporting students with their interests and career journey
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, collaboration, teamwork, and time-management skills
  • Be willing to give and receive feedback
  • Enhance tech and marketing skills (e.g. through using platforms like Handshake, Jobscan, ChatGPT and more)
  • Show curiosity and the willingness to step outside of one’s comfort zone
  • Engage with JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) practices, exploration, and learnings
  • Take initiative on tasks and prioritizing departmental needs
  • Advance your career readiness through the experience and through training and development

Returnees: We love that most of our students opt to return for 2-3 years. Returning students are invited to:

  • Take on additional job responsibilities with their Interest Groups by taking their leadership to the next level
  • Serve as a mentor/role-model to our newest student hires
  • Bring a vision or idea for your Interest Group to life and take initiative with program or department responsibilities.

Expectations & Responsibilities

*For this position, attending August Training from Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 23 (the week prior to the first week of classes) is required. Weekly Peer Leader meetings during the semester (typically Mondays at 2:15pm, but subject to change) are also required. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

*Commit roughly 8 hours/week throughout the academic year on the following responsibilities (which may include occasional evenings & weekends):

  • Coach students on career related topics in one-to-one and group settings, done both in-person and virtually (e.g., Drop-Ins and online doc reviews).
  • Support your designated Career Interest Group with regular communications (e.g., newsletter, online postings), development of signature events, & the outreach to alums, employers, and members of your Interest Group.
  • Build relationships with student clubs/orgs/affinity groups using personal connections, UVM Clubs, UVM Connect, and internal referrals to support Interest Group activities (e.g., co-sponsoring events, cross-promoting opportunities, supporting members with career prep).
  • Support department activities (e.g., Career fairs, Interest Group signature events; and more).
  • Participate in our JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) program to learn more about yourself and others.
  • Willingness to share your own story to illustrate how students can gain & leverage meaningful experiences (e.g., internships, jobs, volunteer, research) to reach their goals.

Pay: $13–15/hr
Location: Hybrid, based in Burlington, VT
Work in person for part of the week, from the location
